Our Approach to Fees
We provide legal services with a focus on clarity, fairness and open communication. Our approach to fees is tailored to the complexity, scope and stage of each matter.
Before work begins, we discuss the issues, the available options, and the anticipated costs so clients can make informed decisions about how to proceed.
Many of our clients are referred by accountants and other professional advisors who trust us to provide practical advice, responsive service and clear communication throughout the process.
No two tax disputes are the same. The amount in dispute, the complexity of the issues, the stage of the proceeding and the client’s objectives can all affect the time and resources needed to resolve the matter.
Based on the information available at the outset and our experience with similar matters, we provide realistic fee estimates and discuss anticipated costs at key stages of the engagement.
As a matter progresses, new facts, documents or positions taken by the CRA may change the scope of work involved. When the scope changes, we discuss the potential impact on fees before significant additional work is undertaken.
Our goal is to help clients understand the likely costs of pursuing a matter and make informed decisions at each stage.
The most appropriate fee arrangement depends on the nature of the matter.
Depending on the engagement, we may be able to offer fixed fees for defined services, staged or milestone-based fees, capped fee arrangements, hourly billing or other customized arrangements.
Available options can be discussed at the outset of the engagement.
Our invoices describe the work performed, the time spent and the progress made on the file so clients can see what has been done and how fees have been incurred.
We typically invoice monthly or when a meaningful stage of work has been completed.
We offer several convenient payment options, including credit card, cheque, e-transfer, direct deposit and international bank transfer.
Payment instructions are provided during the engagement or upon request.
We are committed to using our tax dispute experience in matters where access to legal representation can make a meaningful difference.
From time to time, we provide pro bono legal services to individuals or organizations involved in complex disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency, particularly where the matter raises issues of broader public, legal or social importance.
Our capacity is limited, so we can only accept a small number of pro bono matters.
